Mission
The Brevard County Historical Commission, established by ordinance of Brevard County to “collect, arrange, record, and preserve historical materials”, performs additional functions such as acquiring narratives of the early pioneers, marking historical locations throughout the county, and recording historical information.

Members
Each County Commissioner appoints three members to the Historical Commission for a total of fifteen Historical Commissioners.. County Staff provides administrative and technical support to the Historical Commission.

The collections are generally available to the public during regular business hours.
Call in advance at 321-433-4415 to schedule an appointment.

Meetings
The Historical Commission holds regular monthly meetings the first Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Archive meeting room. The public is welcome and invited to attend. Please call the Historical Commission’s office at 321-433-4415 to confirm meeting in case of cancellations.

Projects
Some of the projects undertaken by the Historical Commission include:

  • Publication of an official Brevard County History
  • Designation of Historical and Archaeological Landmarks
  • Publication of a pamphlet identifying the Landmarks
  • Preservation of early newspapers, maps and records
  • Collection of individual oral histories on video
  • Publishing of a semi-annual journal entitled The Indian River Journal

Partnerships
The Historical Commission works cooperatively with various groups and organizations in the community to preserve the County’s history and archaeology.
